Nisswa is a popular resort town located in Crow Wing County, approximately two-and-a-half hours north of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Surrounded by a large chain of lakes, the city draws thousands of tourists each year. The year-round population, however, is smaller, with little over 2,000 residents living in Nisswa permanently.
Back in the early 20th century, Nisswa was known as Smiley Township. A local man named Leon Lum made it his mission to rename the community, convincing other residents to agree with the name change. He was successful, and upon the incorporation of the town in 1908, Smiley Township became formally known as Nisswa, from the Ojibwe word nessawae or “in the middle/three.”
Nisswa became a municipality in 1946. Sitting on a total area of roughly 18.34 square miles, the city is part of the Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area. Neighboring communities include Brainerd, Baxter, Deerwood, and Pequot Lakes. Nisswa is served by Brainerd Public Schools and Pequot Lakes Schools.
