Formerly known as Withington, Deerwood was first platted in 1892. In 1909, it was incorporated as a village. It was later reamed Deerwood due to the healthy population of deer that live in the woods. Today, it is part of the Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town is served by Brainerd Public Schools and Crosby-Ironton Schools.

These unique lakes were created when the old Cuyuna Iron Range open mine pits stopped operation. Crosby is also home to one of the finest medical facilities in the region: Cuyuna Regional Medical Center.
