Brainerd is a vibrant, small city located in Crow Wing County, of which it is designated as the county seat. It is the principal city of the Brainerd Micropolitan Area, home to several regional attractions including Brainerd International Raceway. Covering a total of roughly 12.6 square miles, Brainerd is considered smaller than other cities, but in central Minnesota, is recognized as one of the largest.

Prior to its foundation in 1870, Brainerd served as the home of Ojibwe Indians. European settlers only arrived in the area in the early 19th century. The city received its name from John Gregory Smith, president of the Northern Pacific Railroad, who named the city after his wife and father-in-law. Brainerd was then incorporated as a city in 1873.

Brainerd and its surrounding areas are rich in outdoor recreation. This makes it an exceptionally popular tourist destination. As of the most recent population survey, Brainerd is home to approximately 13,300 year-round residents. Public schools in the city are managed by Brainerd Public Schools.
