Dubbed as a “historic Mississippi riverboat town,” Aitkin is the county seat of Aitkin, located approximately 35 minutes from Brainerd. Several lakes are located in close proximity, but the most prominent body of water is the Mississippi River, which flows through Aitkin.
Aitkin is a small community, covering a total area of about 2.20 square miles. It has a year-round population, however, of over 2,000 residents. The city was incorporated in 1889 and named after William Alexander Aitken, a Scottish fur trader with the American Fur Company. Aitkin is served by Aitkin Public Schools.
